A local Lego club is 500 members strong — and they’re building whole cities

Kansas City Brick Lab

If you’ve been to Union Station around the holidays, you’ve probably seen the immaculate Christmas-themed Lego train setup. You can credit that all to a group of self-proclaimed adult Lego enthusiasts.

Kansas City Brick Lab (facebook.com/groups/legofanskc) is a Lego user group managed by Shawn Kelley. It has just over 500 members from both the metro and farther reaches of Missouri and Kansas.

Although a heck of a lot of planning goes into these displays, builders don’t follow any specific instructions. “We just kind of wing it,” Kelley says, adding that group members are already starting to plan this year’s Union Station Christmas display. “We’ll come up with our base design months in advance.”

Standout exhibitions in the past include a Southwestern-themed table and a Who Framed Roger Rabbit? display.

You can also catch Brick Lab builds at public libraries around the KC area and at an exhibition, “Brickworld Kansas City,” on Aug. 3 and 4 at Overland Park Convention Center.
