There are a lot of great coffee shops in KC, but when we want a moment of calm, we go to Monarch Coffee (3550 Broadway Blvd., Kansas City, Mo. monarchcoffeekc.com). The Midtown shop’s immaculate interior — white hex penny-tile flooring, bright white walls and globed light fixtures — has made this Midtown coffee stop a must-see for both locals and out-of-towners. It’s not unusual to see customers snapping souvenir photos for Instagram. And yet, the space is always uncannily calm.
Owner Jaime Rovenstine was inspired by European vibes and sought to make her space feel different than other local cafes.
“Coffee culture is historically male-dominated, and we wanted women and non-binary folks to feel equally welcome in our space through our design,” Rovenstine says. “We wanted to offer an elevated coffee experience but one without pretension. Everyone is welcome and deserves to be in our space.”
Rovenstine sought to eliminate unnecessary noise to make the experience as zen as possible — which is why employees deliver coffee straight to your table rather than hollering out names.
The coffee creations are served in large white coffee cups or tall glasses. Try the sweet orange dreamsicle latte: chilled espresso floating with vanilla and orange flavors and milk served with a bright orange sugar rock stir stick.
