This Kansas City virtual reality spot makes its own awesome games

At-home virtual reality equipment is rapidly improving with the introduction of products like the Oculus Quest, but they still have a long way to go before they can match the experience at FlipSwitch VR (2021 Washington St., Kansas City, Mo. 816-492-7738, flipswitchvr.com).

This shop, which opened in January 2018 in the Crossroads District, offers a gaming experience where “your body is the controller and your mind believes it’s real.”

General manager Matt Gipson says most at-home VR systems limit your ability to walk around. This system allows gamers to roam free and play in the same room, something that isn’t possible with home VR systems — not yet at least. Flipswitch built two of its own games and is in the process of designing two new games. The process is time-consuming, as the games have to be custom built for free-roam VR.

The VR studio isn’t just for Fortnite-obsessed teens, either.

“We had an older gentleman come in and play,” Gipson says. “He’d just gotten his hip replacement done two months prior, and he was in there with his cane, just killing virtual zombies.”
