Too many drivers don’t notice traditional crosswalks. That’s why Kansas City, Kansas, has a new 3D crosswalk designed to cause double-takes at the intersection of Augusta and Northridge Drives. The floating crosswalk is the handiwork of traffic engineer Lediana Laboy, who was inspired by designs in Iceland. It’s still in the testing phase, but Laboy hopes to soon install a second one. And don’t worry: Although it looks like it’s popping off the street, the crosswalk still conforms to the standards used by traffic engineers nationwide, Laboy says.
