Kansas City has had a rough go at it this month. Right before Memorial Day Weekend, many public pools announced that they would not be opening due to cold weather, despite what ended up being a relatively sunny and warm weekend. Now, our city is alarmingly close to breaking the record for most rainfall recorded in the month of May.
According to the National Weather Service, this May is the second-wettest May and the eighth-wettest month in our city’s 131-year history of collecting weather data. The wettest May recorded 12.75 inches of rainfall and as of right now, we’re at 11.02 inches.
The Missouri River is also at the highest level that it’s been at since 1995.
Meteorologists are warning that tonight’s storm could get treacherous. KCTV even stated that it “could be long-lived and intense” and that the humid conditions makes for a high tornado risk. These alerts fall heartbreakingly close to the tornadoes that Jefferson City experienced last week, which resulted in excessive damage and three fatalities.
