The Kansas City Public Library (KCPL) system is kicking off the summer months with the Summer Reading Program, which aims to recognize individuality, creativity and unity by fostering a love of reading. This year’s theme is “Reading Party,” which commemorates KCPL’s 150th anniversary.

This milestone year not only celebrates a rich history of serving the community, but also ushers in another exciting summer with the system’s free summer reading program, which aims to inspire people of all ages to engage with books. From thrillers and cookbooks, to picture books and graphic novels, readers just need to read (and log) any five books to win a prize. Prizes include brand new books, snack cups, pint glasses, stuffed animals, and more.

Various KCPL branches have events for the reading program throughout the summer, including Family Film Fridays—which show a family movie indoors to beat the summer heat, Art Fridays with art programs aimed at teens, story times and various workshops.

Anyone can participate in the program—all they need to do is read five books, from anywhere, at any age level, and of any genre. People can register at any KCPL location or using the Beanstack app where they can log their books and they can track their progress and prizes.

“Every year we aim to promote reading and give kids and parents the chance to do something meaningful and fun together,” says Angie Hattey, program coordinator and assistant librarian.

The summer reading program runs from June 1–August 15. More information about the summer reading program and upcoming summer activities can be found at kclibrary.org/calendar
