There’s a new speakeasy-style cocktail lounge in town.
The Brass Monkey, which officially opened Friday, is an immersive experience, complete with moody lighting, vintage charm and a touch of theatrics.
The cocktail lounge is attached to the not-yet-open boutique hotel The Riff (307 Admiral Blvd., KCMO), but guests can enter the bar from outside. Just follow the whimsical trail of playing cards from the sidewalk to the door. Once inside, guests flip a power switch near the door to alert staff they’re waiting. On busier nights, however, a host will greet and seat guests.
The small space feels like a Victorian-era parlor. Upon my visit last week, velvet-fringed lampshades cast a soft glow over exposed brick walls and vintage chairs. There’s an element of mystery with masks hanging on the walls. Even a mirror in the bathroom reads, “I think we’re alone now.” All this drama is elevated even more so by the drink menu.
Drink highlights include The Brass Monkey, of course, but also the Cherry Moon, a twist on the Amaretto Sour topped with Cherry Pepsi cold foam, and The Pomegranate, a cocktail that comes with jello and a small spoon.
The Alchemist Experience, however, is a must-try. A server will present you with a deck of shuffled playing cards and ask you to select two. Each card corresponds to a certain spirit or syrup, so, depending on what you draw, Kelsey Kennedy, the bar program creator, mixes a one-of-a-kind cocktail based on your unique combo. My personal card draw created a cocktail made with cassis syrup and blueberry liqueur, and I thoroughly enjoyed my surprise.
A magician roamed from table to table performing card tricks on my visit, which was also a delight. Co-owner Dan Scott says performers like this will appear from time to time, but aren’t guaranteed.
With its theatrical vibe, hidden entrance and expertly made drinks, The Brass Monkey is already making its mark, well before The Riff hotel opens its doors sometime in 2026.
