Our Food Editor’s Favorite Sweet Treats Right Now

Before I became a food writer, I was a chocolatier. Before that, I baked cakes as a side gig. Considering the time I’ve spent making and eating desserts, I like to think I have a refined sweet tooth.

That sweet tooth especially took hold while I was pregnant from January through September. My husband could not keep enough ice cream sandwiches stocked in our freezer (don’t worry, I’ve included my favorite spot for those down below).

I’ve racked up a few favorite sweet treats around town and got to share them on the most recent episode of KCUR’s Up To Date.

I joined Carlton Logan, admin of the Kansas City Eats Facebook Page, and James Beard award-winning editor and freelance writer Jill Silva to discuss some notable sweet treats and desserts in KC.

Listen to the podcast episode here or read my recommendations below.

Aurora Cafe & Bakery’s Crème Brûlée Concha (7101 College Blvd, Suite 101, Overland Park, KS)

This is my favorite bakery right now. Hidden in the corporate BOK building in Overland Park, owners Javier and Kerianne Nuñez make Mexican inspired pastries. Everything is stellar (especially Kerrianne’s sandwiches) but their artisan conchas are truly next level, especially the crème brûlée concha.

Green Dirt on Oak’s Fresh Cheesecake (1601 Oak St., KCMO)

Th cheesecake is a must-have when ending your dining experience at Green Dirt Farm’s new restaurant. It’s made with their artisan tangy fresh sheep’s cheese. My goodness. This thing is good.

The French Market’s Lemon Entremet (6943 Tomahawk Rd., Prairie Village, KS)

Logan and I both had the French Market’s lemon entremet on our lists. It’s that good.

Granted, the market displays a gorgeous spread of intricate pastries behind their case every day and any one of them is sure to be a home run. But the lemon entremet, with its sponge cake and lemon curd all compact into a perfect single portion, is next level.

Summer Salt Ice Cream’s Ice Cream Sandwiches (4051 Somerset Dr., Prairie Village, KS)

I consider myself an ice cream sandwich connoisseur and Summer Salt Ice Cream in Prairie Village is my go-to for this dessert.

There’s a science to the sandwich and not everyone does it justice. The cookie must be soft enough to not break when bitten into. It also can’t be too large. Summer Salt’s version is the perfect size and has a soft, yet sturdy cookie holding it all together. Sometimes the consistency of the cookie varies but it’s a solid sandwich nevertheless.

Zero Zero Pasta’s To-Go Tiramisu (1702 Summit St., KCMO)

Zero Zero Pasta‘s tiramisu is so simple yet insanely delicious. Usually served in a small to-go container, the custard is made from scratch and the lady fingers are dipped in Goat Hill Coffee’s cold brew. They’re not always available but if they are, grab one immediately.

Restaurant At 1900’s Chocolate Banana Pudding With Potato Chips (1900 Shawnee Mission Pkwy, Mission Woods, KS)

This one you may just have to experience for yourself. It’s the equivalent of dipping a salty french fry in a chocolate milkshake. Weirdly delicious.

Sylas & Maddy’s Brickle Ice Cream (11925 Strang Line Rd., Olathe, KS)

Too cold to enjoy ice cream? Blasphemy! Sylas & Maddy’s in Olathe is homemade and their Yellow Brickle Road flavor has changed me. It’s some of the creamiest ice cream in the KC area.

Baba’s Pantry’s Baklava and Turkish Coffee (1019 E 63rd St., KCMO)

Breakfast of champions. Need I say more?
