After skipping last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is set to reopen its mini golf course, which will include a new putt design.
The course will open on March 19. The new design is named “Eyy Putter Putter” and is a tribute to Kansas City Monarchs player Satchel Paige and the 100-year anniversary of the Negro Leagues Baseball association.
The summer of 2019 was the art museum’s first year hosting the whimsical mini golf course, with nine curated holes inspired by the museum’s permanent collection.
The new putt design is meant to replicate Radcliffe Bailey’s “Mound Musician”, a colorful, fan-shaped piece made up of baseballs, wheelbarrow handles, photographs of baseball players and handwritten names. “Mound Musician” is currently on display inside the art gallery. “This new Art Course hole has creativity, innovation and fun at its core,” Tucker Trotter, Chief Executive Officer, Dimensional Innovations, said in a press release. “Teaming with the Nelson-Atkins, we were thrilled to pay homage to the Negro League and Radcliffe Bailey by merging baseball and miniature golf for a memorable experience at the museum’s revered Sculpture Park.”
The museum’s golf course designs came from 75 artists, students and designers. The course will be open on weekends during museum hours from 10 am-5 pm. Tickets can be reserved at nelson-atkins.org and are $16 for the adults, $12 for members and $10 for children four to twelve years old.
