There’s an amazing park hidden on a downtown KC parking garage — here’s how to get there

One of the best gems of the Power & Light District is easy to miss if you aren’t looking for it. The rooftop park, tucked away on top of the parking garage next to Cosentino’s Market (1220 Walnut St., Kansas City, Mo.), is covered in shade trees, park benches, potted plants and two grassy lawns.

Back in 2012, artist Janet Zweig was commissioned to turn a grass-covered green roof into a destination. She did that by designing details like a stage for concerts inside a see-through box car built for live performances.

“I wanted to make it dynamic and interactive, something people can use,” says Zweig, who now lives in New York. “It was a semi-public park no one was using, and I wanted to make something happen up there.”
