Sone Ze Ya
Myanmar’s unofficial national dish is a traditional breakfast soup called Mohinga, and at Sone Ze Ya in the historic Northeast, it’s the house specialty. Sit down at one of the tables inside this restaurant run by Swa Dit and Elida Wod, a brother and sister duo, and enjoy this steaming bowl of rice vermicelli noodles in a fish and lemongrass broth layered with chopped green onions, garlic, ginger and cilantro and topped with crispy bean curd. Traditionally, mohinga is a fish stew, but at Sone Ze Ya, you’ll find it served with beef. Dit and Wod are from Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, and have been living in Kansas City for the past eight years. The name of their restaurant translates to “all come together,” and eating here feels like being welcomed into an old friend’s dining room, where every dish is lovingly made and served on patterned china.
