Poïó Mexican BBQ will shutter its doors come April 22

Poïó Mexican BBQ wood-fired chicken, wood-fired whole chicken, adobe pork ribs, charred broccoli, kimchi fried rice, tortillas and elotes.

Poïó Mexican BBQ took to social media announcing it had been “an incredible run,” but would soon be closing up shop (800 S. 7th st. KCK).

“We are grateful to our devoted patrons for supporting us over the years. Our team is humbled by the endless positive feedback we have received on our concept, menu, and unique approach to dining,” the April 17 Instagram post says. “We regret any inconvenience this may cause but want to emphasize that we will cherish every moment we have with our guests until the very end. Come in for one last time for an unforgettable dining experience and to bid farewell to Poio Mexican BBQ. Let’s make the most of the time we have left to cherish good company, good food, and good memories.”

According to Fox 4, owner Carlos Mortera announced last summer that he was “selling the Poio brand for $250,000, hoping to spend more time with his family.”

The fast-casual barbecue joint has been in business since the fall of 2019 serving traditional barbecue with innovative twists. The menu showcased wood-fired chicken and ribs along with sides of kimchi fried rice and poblano mac n’ cheese. Former Kansas City magazine’s food editor Natalie Torres Gallagher wrote about Mortera and Poïó’s early days in her 2019 article A Clucking Good Time.

Channel 41 KSHB says Mortera “plans to continue operating [his] catering business,” The Bite and restaurant consulting. Poïó officially closes at the end of the business day on April 22

You’ll still be able to find a few of Poïó’s barbecue dishes at the new KCI airport in the Made of KC food hall. Keep an eye out for a review of KCI’s airport food in next month’s issue of Kansas City magazine.
