Well, kids, when two kinds of food really like each other, they come together and form a whole other kind of food. That’s what happens at Wiener Kitchen (9645 W. 87th St., Overland Park, Kan., 913-296-8023, wienerwagonkc.com), where chefs David Derr and Jessica Rush dream up magnificent flavor combinations centered around — you guessed it — wieners. All the sausages are made with natural casings and locally sourced proteins, and they’re all really, really good. But it’s the dishes Derr and Rush dream up that really set them apart. Take, for example, our newest obsession: the chorizo rojo sausage made with spiced pork, wrapped in a handmade hybrid flour and masa tortilla in lieu of a bun, then topped with an onion-jalapeno relish, hot sauce, cilantro-lime aioli and a fried egg. Each bite explodes with a salty, spicy, fatty and wholly satisfying combination of flavors. At a minimum, it’s the hangover cure science has been searching for, but to us, this glorious mutation — part hot dog, part burrito — is the Frankenstein of our dreams.
