Congratulations are in order to… Well, to us.
Specifically, to Kansas City‘s hardworking and talented design team of Katie Henrichs and Julie Babcock, who won first place in a national magazine awards contest last week.
We don’t normally like to toot our own horn, but it’s a big honor and our team couldn’t be happier and more humbled.
Last week, the City Regional Magazine Association hosted its annual Magazine Awards ceremony. The CRMA is a trade organization that represents the best local magazines in the country, from Texas Monthly to Los Angeles to Yankee in New Hampshire. Members of the organization can submit their best stories, photos and designs for an annual awards contest judged by journalism professors and pros.
Kansas City is pleased to walk away with first place in Spread Design for our “Long Live the Queen” feature, with photography by Samantha Levi and words by Bryce Bailey. The story was a profile of local drag queen and RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant Widow Von’Du from our July 2020 issue.
“The spread seamlessly merges engaging portrait photography with clever typography. Those along with its bright colorful approach and style details create a striking experience for the reader,” the judge’s comments read.
Other finalists in our category and circulation division were Baltimore Magazine, Portland Monthly, Seattle Met and St. Louis Magazine.
Kansas City was also a finalist for Cover Excellence award based on three issues from last year: March, April and October.

“Here Kansas City covers some city magazine staples but does so with a nice punch. All three covers are bold, grab readers immediately and make them want to open the issue, which is everything you want in a magazine cover,” the judges said.
