Here are ten things to do in KC this weekend, August 7—10 including Cyndi Lauper, Frozen The Musical and Heart of America Hot Dog Festival.
The Freedom Affair
Each second Friday of the month, North Kansas City’s Summer Concert Series brings a free show to Macken Park. This month, local soul powerhouse The Freedom Affair takes over the pavilion. Make it an evening and swing by the Iron District for a quick bite before dancing the night away.
August 8. 6 pm. Macken Park.

When Harry Met Sally
Rooftop Cinema Club has officially arrived. Located at the corner of Broadway and 21st Street, the open-air movie theater—known for its skyline views in major cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, London and more—opened its Crossroads’ locale in July. Enjoy cocktails, mocktails and elevated bar-food bites alongside a showing of the classic rom-com When Harry Met Sally.

Cyndi Lauper
Superstar Cyndi Lauper pays tribute to her hit single on her farewell Girls Just Wanna Have Fun tour. With a passion for fine art (Lauper was an art major at Vermont’s Johnson State College), the colorful, quirky ’80s icon teams up with Japanese contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama to fuse design with music in arenas across North America. As for merch? Beyond T-shirts, wigs of Lauper’s signature pink ’do are on the market.

Men I Trust
With hits like “Show Me How” and “Numb,” Canadian indie band Men I Trust’s transcendent, hypnotic dream-pop sound has garnered hundreds of millions of streams. In spite of their growing popularity, they’ve remained a grassroots operation, continuing to self-release all of their music. Led by singer Emmanuelle Proulx, their KC performance is in support of their most recent album, Equus Caballus. Berlin-based duo Strongboi opens.
August 9. 8 pm. The Midland Theatre.
CATS
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s seven-time Tony Award-winning musical comes to Crown Center. The musical follows a clowder of cats—named the Jellicles—as they gather for the annual Jellicle Ball and choose which cat will be reborn. Presented by Music Theater Heritage, the production is originally based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.
August 7—31. Times vary. Grand Theater.
Frozen The Musical
In this Disney blockbuster Broadway adaptation, beloved characters Anna, Elsa, Olaf and more bring favorites like “Let It Go” and “In Summer” to life on Starlight Theatre’s stage. Plus, two Kansas Citians—Hailey Kenyon and Bellamy Kelly—make their debut as Young Anna and Young Elsa.
August 5—10. 8 pm. Starlight Theatre.
Heart of America Hot Dog Festival
Hot dogs are a fixture of America’s Pastime, making them the perfect centerpiece for the Negro Leauges Baseball Museum’s annual fundraiser. For over a decade, the Heart of America Hot Dog Festival has brought together food, live music and community down on the Vine. This year’s lineup features jazz and R&B icons from around the country, including Silk and Eric Benét, Tom Browne, Rose Royce and more.
August 9. 3 pm. 18th and Vine Jazz District.

Mini Golf At The Museum

Mufasa: The Lion King
Free movie nights are in full swing at Legends and this weekend’s feature is Mufasa: The Lion King, a live-action film that serves as both a prequel and sequel to the 1994 animated blockbuster. Each Saturday night through October, the shopping center hosts an outdoor screening of a fan-favorite film. Pack a lawn chair and blanket and enjoy drinks from Dave & Buster’s mobile bar on the lawn.
August 9. 7 pm. Legends Outlets.

Talya Groves
Former Broadway performer Talya Groves is a Kansas City music scene star. Singing anything and everything from showtunes to jazz standards to pop songs, Groves’ magnetic presence seems to always captivate the room. Nearly every Friday night, she commands the stage at The Phoenix.
