Ten Things To Do In KC This Weekend, July 10—13

Here are ten things to do in KC this weekend, July 10—13, including The Wiz, WeekEnder and Social Distortion.

Ole 60

Miller Light’s Hot Country Nights is back for the summer season, bringing renowned country artists every Thursday to KC Live! In P&L. This week’s performance features Ole 60—self-described as “not your father’s country band”—as they meld their Kentucky twang with Southern rock.

July 10. 7 pm. KC Live!

The Wiz

Ease on down the road to The Wiz as the Broadway national tour makes a stop in KC. This spin on L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz—told through the lens of the Black experience—is a tried-and-true musical theater fan-favorite with songs like “You Can’t Win” and “Home.” When the production made its Broadway debut in 1975, it won seven Tony Awards and, though not initially popular, the 1978 movie adaptation starring pop icons Dianna Ross and Michael Jackson has since become a cult classic.

DaNoyze

All aboard! Local drummer Kenny Watson Jr. steers his jazz and neo-soul project, DaNoyze, to The Ship. Groove the night away, and don’t skip the West Bottoms bar’s red beans and rice.

WeekEnder

Crown Center kicks off WeekEnder, a free, outdoor summer entertainment series. Now through August 1, each Friday night brings live music, food trucks and a movie screening after sunset. This week’s entertainment includes Damien Gunn Band and a showing of last year’s action packed disaster-thriller Twisters. Plus, Estrella Azul is serving up tacos, tortas and more, and Bryce’s Food Truck is slinging chicken tenders and barbeque pulled pork sandwiches all night long.

Social Distortion

Inspired by British icons like The Rolling Stones and the Sex Pistols, Social Distortion fuses punk with a rockabilly twang. Fronted by founding member Mike Ness, the SoCal punk pioneers have weathered several lineup changes since their founding in 1978, but remain one of the best-selling bands in their genre with over three million records sold. Plague Vendor opens.

July 11. 8 pm. Uptown Theater.

Pepper’s Birthday Bash

J. Rieger & Co. celebrates the dog days of summer—and beloved distillery dog (and unofficial mascot) Pepper’s 10th birthday. At Pepper’s Birthday Bash, grab a drink and bring your furry friend for treats from Mixed Mutt Creamery, crafts with CITYDOG and more.

West Side Story

The Jets and Sharks duke it out in one of the most popular musicals of all time: West Side Story. Set in New York City, the tale of star-crossed lovers is composer Leonard Bernstein’s 20th century adaptation of Romeo and Juliet and features beloved selections like “Maria” and “Somewhere.” This weekend marks the opening of the production, a collaboration between The White Theatre at The J and Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City.

July 5—27. Times vary. The White Theatre at The J.

Mini Golf At The Museum

It’s back! A summer highlight, Art Course offers an artist-designed mini-golf adventure within the Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park at the Nelson-Atkins Museum. Every Thursday through Monday, you can play nine unique holes, each offering a creative spin on a masterpiece from the museum’s collection.
