6 men’s grooming shops that go beyond haircuts

Every man deserves to treat himself to a nice haircut. And hey, why not throw in a hot towel shave while you’re at it? You may as well finish it off with a shoeshine. These grooming shops are for fellas looking to be pampered.

Buffalo Mane Barbershop

The rugged and masculine feel at Buffalo Mane Barbershop is made evident by the giant bison head on the wall at the downtown location. Krystal and Phil Leitner opened that shop five years ago, and their contemporary Lenexa salon followed. Downtown: 719 Grand Blvd., Kansas City, Mo. Lenexa: 9141 Caenen Lake Road #3668, Lenexa, Kan.

Hudson/Hawk

The Mark Twain quotes on the wall, wood paneling and hanging American flag make Hudson/Hawk feel so utterly Midwest — which is fitting considering the chain sprouted in Springfield. Whether you need to get your mane tamed or scruff shaped, the shop’s boutique Westport and Prairie Village locations are great places to do it. Westport: 1416 Westport Road, Kansas City, Mo. Prairie Village: 8235 Corinth Mall, Prairie Village, Kan.

The Rockford

The Rockford is as masculine as masculine gets. The shop’s mission states “We honor every opportunity to act, and be treated, like a man,” and a motorcycle is on display near the check-in desk. Aside from typical barbershop offerings (complete with vibrating shoulder massages, might we add), The Rockford’s menu offers true treat-yourself items like paraffin dips and scalp treatments. 115 E. Gregory Blvd., Kansas City, Mo.

Sole Patch

Owner Ron Mayer opened KCK’s Sole Patch 12 years ago. The menu (which the shop calls a “setlist”) includes services like Center Stage Haircut, Head Rush Rinse and Harmonic Hot Shave. Sole Patch pays tribute to the barbershop quartets era with its own guitar lounge, which hosts local performers. 2872 W. 47th St., Kansas City, Kan.

Chop Tops

The defining trait of this edgy barbershop is that customers get an ice-cold Pabst Blue Ribbon beer with every haircut. Bumper stickers and old band posters line the walls at locations in Waldo and on 39th Street. Chop Tops specializes in lady cuts and color, too. Waldo: 115 E. Gregory Blvd., Kansas City, Mo. 39th Street: 611 W. 39th St., Kansas City, Mo.

The Barberette

The Barberette, which sits just west of River Market, was started by husband-wife pair Blake and Lavyne McGinnis in April 2018. This charming spot has traditional barbershop cuts, shaves and even hot steam facials. 426 W. 5th St. #2,  Kansas City, Mo.
