From sugar skulls and sweet breads to parades and concerts, Kansas Citians will be celebrating Dia de Muertos or Day of the Dead for more than a month leading up to the official holidays at the end of October to the beginning of November.
Dia de Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a multi-day festival celebrated every year from October 31 to November 2, it follows from All Hallows Eve or Halloween and then is observed November 2. Families who celebrate often construct altars and add offerings–also known as ofrendas. Although it is widely observed in Mexico, where the tradition started, it is also celebrated in other Latin American countries and is becoming more common here in the states.
Here’s a list of KC’s most colorful Dia de Muertos celebrations.
