The defending Super Bowl champions earned their seventh-straight (regular and postseason) win after defeating the Ravens 27-20 in last night’s home opener and quarterback Patrick Mahomes credits the winning play to black cleats.

When Mahomes was asked postgame what he thought about the end game winning play, he acknowledged it was tricky.  “Definitely nerve racking,” Mahomes said of Ravens’ tight end Isaiah Likely’s almost touchdown. Likely’s toe  came down on the white out-of-bounds line in the back of the end zone with the clock showing zeros. “It looked good from my angle on the sideline, but then the first view you saw you could see the cleat.”  And although the Ravens at first thought the touchdown counted, replays of the black cleated toe landing in the white end zone proved it wasn’t so. “It’s a great football team and I’m sure we’ll see them again at some point in the playoffs,” Mahomes said. “We’re happy with the win now. (You) just have to wear white cleats next time,  that’s my advice for him [Likely].”

Mahomes also broke the Chiefs franchise record for career passing yards at last night’s game, breaking quarterback Len Dawson’s mark of 28,507 yards. Mahomes has now thrown for 28,715 yards in his career. With a 23-yard pass to tight end Travis Kelce, Mahomes bested Dawson’s mark in just 97 games as a member of the Chiefs.

Kelce’s girlfriend and superfan Taylor Swift also made an appearance, causing a stir in thigh-high red boots.

Next the Chiefs play the Cincinnati Bengals at Arrowhead, Sept. 15.
