Here are eleven things to do in KC this weekend, August 27—30 including Flew the Coop Fest, Summer Movie Nights at the Arboretum and Spotlight: Charlie Parker.
Wine Walk for Wildlife
The Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium has the only event in town where you can enjoy a summer evening gazing at wildlife with a glass of vino in your hand. Guests can stroll through the zoo while sipping 40 different types of wine, enjoying a variety of musicians and talking with the zoo’s animal specialists. Food from Tuxedo Grill and a wide variety of treats from food trucks will be available to purchase.

Flew the Coop Fest
Over the past seven years, Flew the Coop Sessions has built a dedicated following through its video series highlighting local bands. Now, the nonprofit organization is extending beyond the digital platform with the inaugural Flew the Coop Fest.
The event spans two venues in the West Bottoms and features 20 Kansas City artists, all of whom have appeared in the video series, including Lauren Lovelle, Kat King, Virga and Eddie Moore. Beyond the live music, Flew the Coop Fest will also welcome food trucks, a whiskey tasting pop-up from West Bottoms Whiskey Company, art vendors and locally grown produce from KC Food Hub.

Soft Clubbing at Elixir with DJ hunni bunni
Clubbing at a museum may be an unlikely pairing, but the Museum of Kansas City knows how to throw a party. On the last Thursday of the month, DJ hunni bunni spins an eclectic R&B, house, funk and more in the museum’s cafe, Elixir. Sip a cocktail, enjoy ice cream from Fairway Creamery, or grab a coffee or soda while dancing the early evening away. Admission is free.

Adam Larson Quartet
Adam Larson, a nationally touring saxophonist who calls KC home, takes the stage at The Ship. He’ll perform alongside his quartet, which features pianist Andrew Ouellette, bassist Sebastian Arias and drummer John Kizilarmut. Admission is free.

Summer Movie Nights at the Arboretum
Watch a movie under the stars at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. This month, the botanical gardens’ summer series screens action comedy Miss Congeniality, starring Sandra Bullock. Grab a bite at the garden’s bistro, Cafe Celeste, or one of the many food trucks on site.

Spotlight: Charlie Parker
Bird lives! Each year, nonprofit KC Jazz ALIVE celebrates bebop legend Charlie Parker’s birthday and lasting legacy with a concert. At Spotlight: Charlie Parker, the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra pays homage to Parker alongside guest saxophonists Bobby Watson, Matt Otto, Stephen Martin and emerging artists on the scene.

KC Current vs. North Carolina Courage
KC baby! This weekend, KC Current faces off against North Carolina Courage. The Current last played the North Carolina club in May, winning the match with two goals scored in the first half. The KC team has an impressive reputation when playing on its own turf, holding the NWSL’s unbeaten home streak record.

Wicked
Since making its Broadway debut more than 20 years ago, Wicked has become one of the most popular musicals in history. In line with the stage production’s reputation, the recent film adaptations starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande brought the musical to new heights, shattering box office records. With selections like “Defying Gravity” and “Popular,” this Wizard of Oz spinoff tells the backstory of the misunderstood Wicked Witch, Elphaba, and the bubbly yet calculated Good Witch, Glinda. The national Broadway tour stops in Kansas City for 24 showings.

Hot Country Nights: George Birge
Hot Country Nights are back, bringing live music to the Power & Light District on Thursdays through August. This week, singer-songwriter George Birge performs hits like “Mind on You” and “Cowboy Songs.” To celebrate the series’ final show of the summer, admission is free.

Mini Golf At The Museum
It’s back! Art Course offers an artist-designed mini-golf adventure within the Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park at the Nelson-Atkins Museum. Play nine unique holes, each offering a creative spin on a masterpiece from the museum’s collection.

Cross Threaded
Kansas City Artists Coalition’s new textile exhibit, Cross Threaded features works by 14 local artists. While the artists work with strikingly similar (and often recycled) materials, their approaches vary widely, from embroidery to soft sculpture to quilting and beyond.
