The igloo trend has come to KC.
The Fontaine luxury hotel on the Plaza brought the stylish plastic bubbles to their rooftop through mid-February. Similar igloos have been popping up all over the country as bars look for creative ways to extend patio season. The Fontaine’s version comes with a view of the Plaza’s holiday lights and top-notch cocktails.
The Fontaine’s bubbles have been dubbed Nine Zero One Igloo Bar, and features cocktails and food meant to accentuate the Scandinavian theme of the experience. Open six days per week (Tuesday-Sunday), there will be a variety of local DJs whose musical mixes give a sense of close engagement among a socially distanced crowd. While general admission reservations will get you into one of the many unique seating areas, you’ll want to consider reserving an igloo on the rooftop (seat up to six for $120).
The cocktail menu, created by a local mixologist, offer a variety of approachable cocktails including Bestafars Egg Nog, Los Posadas (a tequila drink with an evolving flavor that accentuates the pear in the drink), and the Prescription Gimlet (a bright and refreshing gin gimlet). When you find your seat, you’ll receive a bowl of delicious spiced nuts (they’ll be hard to share). If you’re hungry, consider some snackable delicacies including a Prosciutto Board (served with rye and a wonderful smoked aioli) and Dill Smoked Salmon that is very fitting to the Scandinavian theme. For heartier food, consider the Duck Breast dish that balances the strong flavors of the duck with sauces and vegetables.
