The 2026-2027 season for Broadway in Kansas City is shaping up to be one for the books, featuring everything from a revitalized Phantom of the Opera to the hit adaptation of The Outsiders.

“I think we always try to outdo ourselves,” says Craig Aikman, Senior Director of Programming for the American Theatre Guild. “Going into the ’25-26 season, I was like, we can’t possibly do better than this. And we did.”

The season will kick off with The Phantom of the Opera, which returns with all the grandeur that made it so iconic at its inception nearly 40 years ago. Now, it’s even enhanced with modern technology. “It’s going back to what made it incredible, and then some,” Aikman says. “You have 40 years of technological advancement bringing that original vision to life.”

Other highlights include The Outsiders, which Aikman calls “life-changing” after seeing it in New York; Buena Vista Social Club, a “technicolor dream” perfect for families; and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, featuring some of the best special effects ever seen on stage.

Romance lovers will love The Bodyguard, while Water for Elephants offers stunning aerial performances and a beautiful love story about finding yourself mid-life. Fan-favorite SIX also returns by popular demand.

What ties the season of performances together is authenticity, according to Aikman. “Every single one of these shows is about somebody dealing with their authentic self. Trying to figure out who they are and not being afraid to follow the path they set for themselves.”
