Messenger Coffee closes a location

Messenger Coffee has closed one of its two cafes on the Country Club Plaza.

Parent company, locally owned FairWave Specialty Coffee Collective, took over the former Kaldi’s Coffee shops at 318 W. 47th St. and 4771 Jefferson St. in May 2021 and converted them to Messenger.

They closed the 47th Street location Tuesday, saying they hope to see customers at the Jefferson location. Its patio was packed Wednesday morning.

“We have enjoyed having two Messenger Café locations on the Country Club Plaza,” said Suzanne Gunning, spokeswoman for Messenger Coffee, in a statement. “With our lease up at one location, we will consolidate to the Messenger Café at 4771 Jefferson Street. We look forward to continuing to serve our incredible, coffee-loving customers on the Plaza.”

Messenger Coffee serves coffee drinks, iced tea, pastries, bread and more. It also has locations in the Crossroads and at KCI.

The 318 W. 47th St. space had once been a barber shop and then a longtime travel center. In 1993, LATTeLand Espresso opened in the space and then expanded with a second location. Kaldi’s purchased the locations for a rebrand in 2014.
