Children’s Crafting Night: Clay Gnomes

Kick off the new year with a family-friendly evening at Powell Gardens’ monthly craft night. For this month’s activity, participants will make gnomes out of clay pots, accompanied by snacks and story time.

Talya and Her Boyfriends

From show tunes to soul classics, singer Talya Groves does it all. Alongside her band, the Broadway performer consistently draws a crowd at her regular Friday happy hour performance at The Phoenix––one of KC’s oldest surviving nightclubs––for a reason.

Something Wonderful: A Holiday Market

Presented by Englewood Arts Center, Something Wonderful: A Holiday Market is a one-stop shop for locally made artisan items in Independence. The pop-up market features items from Kansas City artists and the art center’s glassblowing studio.

Hokusai: Waves of Inspiration

This weekend marks the closing of Nelson Atkin Museum of Art’s special exhibit, Hokusai: Waves of Inspiration from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The extensive display includes pieces from famous Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai as well as works from multiple generations of artists inspired by his craft.

STUDIO 54: A New Year’s Disco Inferno

Start the new year off right with a dance party at STUDIO 54: A New Year’s Disco Inferno. Local bands Jamogi and The Jammers, Malek Azrael and The Vibes and Kadesh Flow will perform a night of funk, soul, hip-hop and more in the West Bottoms.

New Year, New Waldo!

Kansas City Public Library’s Waldo Branch was closed with limited services for much of December undergoing major and much needed renovations. The library’s New Year, New Waldo celebration marks the unveiling of the $150,000 revamp. Light refreshments will be provided.

Henry Scamurra Quintet

Head to the jazz district to listen to the saxophonist Henry Scamurra’s quintet at Vine Street Brewing Company. Joined by saxophonist Pete Fucinaro, vibraphonist Isaiah Petrie, drummer Ryan J. Lee and bassist Sebastian Arias, Scamurra’s combo will perform contemporary originals and beloved standards.

Festival of Lights

The only thing more beautiful than Powell Gardens in the spring is the botanical garden in the winter, shining with holiday lights. The Festival of Lights is a great opportunity to appreciate the garden’s landscape and architecture while ushering in the holiday spirit. In addition to the mile-long walking path, which includes over 20 miles of lights, attendees may enjoy other attractions such as winter plants like poinsettias, local artwork, opportunities to visit Santa and even workshops on how to make holiday decorations and drinks.

Capone

Bronx-based comic and actor Capone is best known for hosting Harlem’s Amateur Night at the historic Apollo Theater. The comedian will take the stage at Zona Rosa’s Funny Bone Comedy Theater with his relatable, honest jokes.
