Here are thirteen things to do in KC this weekend, November 7-10, including: Vitamin String Quartet, Snow Queen and Nutcracker.

The Heart Sellers

While the difficulties of immigration and integration are not new social themes, The Heart Sellers asks the question: Just how much of yourself are you willing to sacrifice for a new home? The play introduces new Americans Jane and Luna, who contemplate their American dreams while celebrating Thanksgiving without their husbands, who are at work. Hosted by the Unicorn Theatre, a venue that is no stranger to plays that tackle complicated and diverse social issues, The Heart Sellers will pull on your heartstrings.

The Music Man

Your favorite traveling salesman is on his way to Overland Park. The Jewish Community Center presents The Music Man at the Lewis & Shirley White Theatre. The story of a con man with no musical knowledge convinces the people of River City, Iowa, he can organize a boys’ band. This Broadway classic will mark the beginning of the J’s 20th season.

Minds in Motion Tour: My Favorite Things

The Nelson-Atkins Museum teams up with KU Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and Alzheimer’s Association-Heart of America Chapter to create a free gallery tour for people who struggle with memory loss. With the help of specially trained docents who understand Alzheimer patients’ particular needs, these visitors, along with their caregivers, can appreciate the beauty the museum has to offer. While the Minds in Motion series hosts several events throughout the year, this event will encourage its attendees to consider the sights, sounds and smells that the art suggests.

The Soul of Santa’s Christmas Karaoke 

Presented by Rally Gin, during The Soul of Santa’s Christmas Karaoke competitors can sing off for a cash prize. The Royal Chief hosts, and the highly anticipated live Soul of Santa Christmas album will premiere. The event is part of a series for The Soul of Santa “Do Good” Foundation, an organization that connects high-functioning individuals with disabilities from low-to-moderate income households, as well as their parents or caretakers, to vital resources and support services.

Vitamin String Quartet

The Vitamin String Quartet first began in 1999 as an experiment, where the group used classical instruments to transform popular songs. Twenty-plus years later, the group has performed all over the world, with their songs featured on shows like Gossip Girl and Bridgerton. They’re hitting KC on their newest tour, which features a catalog of their classic spin on songs from contemporary icons like Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and Daft Punk.

Gift Gallery

Gift Gallery is a unique two-day shopping experience featuring 60-plus local artisans supporting local charities, including Logan Baker Foundation, Nativity House KC and more. On Friday, Union Horse will provide signature cocktails, Hyde Salon will provide complimentary hair tinseling and there will be a raffle. Saturday, bring the family to visit Santa’s Workshop and get your picture with Santa, shop WildPlains Children’s Boutique and visit the Imagination Station with Land of Let’s Pretend.

Snow Queen

Presented by Heart of America Youth Ballet, this original ballet imagines a prequel to Disney’s beloved Frozen and Hans Christian Anderson’s classic The Snow Queen. Snow Queen includes favorites like Elsa, Anna, Sven and Olaf, as characters and audiences alike try to figure out who the powerful Snow Queen is in this ballet for all ages.

November 8 & 9. 7:30 pm. Folly Theater.

Godfrey

Comedian Godfrey has been working as a standup comedian and actor for over 20 years, both on popular entertainment channels like BET and VH1 and in comedy films like Soul Plane and Zoolander. Best known for his personal comedy that expertly faces stereotypes in fresh, smart and unexpected ways, Godfrey often draws upon his Nigerian and American cultures for funny, poignant performances.

Journey to Oz

Some shows figuratively pull the audience into the performance, but Journey to Oz really does bring them on stage. Presented by Children’s Mercy Kansas City at Starlight’s indoor theater, this show is catered toward children ages five to nine who wish they had followed Dorothy into that tornado and straight into Oz. About 16 people will be chosen to perform individual roles on stage with the cast, and the entire audience will be invited to interact by singing, making sound effects and playing collective roles like Munchkins and Flying Monkeys.

The Kansas City Current Quarterfinal Match

The Kansas City Current will host the first NWSL Playoff match presented by Google Pixel and play right here at CPKC Stadium. After the final weekend of regular season play, the Current have secured the No. 4 seed in the playoffs and will face the No. 5 seed, North Carolina Courage, to fight for their place in history.

The Response Project, Tremor

Pianist Dr. Brianna Matzke is an avid performer and commissioner of new music, collaborating with many composers and appearing in concerts across the globe. The program, Tremor, is a concert of piano premieres for The Response Project, written in response to Matzke’s essential tremor diagnosis. Composers use Matzke’s neurological condition to explore perceptions of ability and disability, and visual artists with disabilities from Visionaries and Voices have also created visual artwork. The  music, images and sound come together for a multimedia concert experience. A wine reception will be provided after the concert.

Simply Tina and Boogie Nights 

Aztec Shawnee Theater presents Simply Tina and Boogie Nights KC, an event full of song and dance. Attendees can first enjoy the Tina Turner tribute, which celebrates her discography and greatest hits. Next, disco band Boogie Nights will come on stage, and attendees are encouraged to take the floor and tackle the disco dance style. With great music, energetic dance and a full bar, you’ll simply have no choice but to boogie.

Nutcracker

World-renowned Grand Kyiv Ballet, which includes some of the most prestigious ballet dancers from Ukraine, breathes new life into the classic heartwarming holiday tale, Nutcracker, which has been beloved for centuries. This beautiful performance is a fantastical journey to a magical kingdom, filled with dancing sugar plum fairies and toy soldiers, where the characters learn that kindness can overcome adversity and create magic.
