You never know quite what you’ll get when you buy a ticket to a Sofar Sounds show (sofarsounds.com). The unique concert production company has a lottery for seats to intimate shows featuring unnamed acts. Venues can be coffee shops, pools, rooftop bars and even living rooms — past venues have included the Crossroads Hotel and Hammerpress Studio.
The Sofar KC chapter was founded by Hank Wiedel, who had seen a show in St. Louis. Leon Bridges and Billie Eilish have appeared on Sofar stages in other cities, and Kansas City musician Jake Wells was selected to be on The Voice after the show’s producers saw his Sofar clip.
In KC, past artists have included Courtney Ann Hall, who strums emotional love songs on her banjo; Ayllu, a Latin folk rock band that mixes contemporary and traditional instruments; and NuBlvckCity, a quartet that blurs the lines of jazz, hip-hop and R&B.
