One of Kansas City’s most recognizable pastry programs is getting a home of its own.

This May, award-winning pastry chef Megan Garrelts of Rye is opening a bakery, Cornflower Baked Goods at Mission Farms (10555 Mission Rd., Leawood, KS). The bakery is slated to open in May, just in time for Mother’s Day.

Garrelts’ pastries, like her pies and cinnamon rolls, have long been the standout menu items at Rye, the Midwestern restaurant she co-owns with husband and chef Colby Garrelts. After more than a decade of serving her signature desserts through Rye’s KC and Leawood locations, Garrelts is giving her baked goods a dedicated home of their own.

Cornflower Baked Goods will feature a pastry case stocked with both new creations and familiar favorites, including cinnamon rolls, pies and cakes known to Rye regulars. The menu will also feature grab-and-go savory sandwiches, specialty dessert sauces, canned cocktails and coffee from Onyx Coffee Lab.

Designed as a neighborhood gathering spot, Cornflower Baked Goods will continue Garrelts’ signature approach to baking, rooted in scratch-made recipes, seasonal ingredients, and Midwestern hospitality. The May opening is great timing, as Cornflower’s menu will be shaped by Garrelts’ personal connection to family traditions and recipes passed down through generations, especially her mother.

A James Beard Award semifinalist for Outstanding Pastry Chef, Garrelts has been featured nationally in Bon AppétitFood & WineThe Wall Street Journal and Saveur.
