Kata Nori Is Opening A Second Location. Here’s What We Know.

Kata Nori, KC’s only hand-rolled sushi restaurant, is expanding.

Kyung “KK” Kim, one of the three owners of Kata Nori alongside Nam Phan and sushi extraordinaire Anh “Bass” Pham, says he and his team have been eyeing a second location for quite some time. When André’s Confiserie Suisse closed at the end of December, the opportunity finally presented itself (4937 W. 119th St., Overland Park, KS).

The 2,800-square-foot space is larger than their original Crossroads location (which we dubbed one of Kansas City’s Best New Restaurants in 2023 and later included in our 2025 Best KC Restaurants list). And with more space comes more seats. While the Crossroads spot offers only a sushi bar for dining, the new Overland Park location will feature a roughly 20-seat sushi bar, plus a dining room with about 20 additional seats. There will also be a cocktail bar, bringing the total capacity to around 40 to 50 guests.

KK says the team is currently working on expanding the food and beverage menus for the new location, though the offerings will remain similar to the Japanese cuisine served at the original location. Pham, who brings experience from the renowned sushi destination Uchi in Austin — where he helped open locations in both Dallas and Denver — will continue to lead the team’s culinary vision.

The design will mirror the Crossroads space, with similar colors and aesthetic. Like the original location, the Overland Park space will also have a mural dedicated to Kansas City.

KK says they’re aiming to open in June, just ahead of the World Cup.

Kata Nori specializes in temaki — a variation of sushi in which rice, fish and condiments are delicately wrapped in a cylindrical sheet of nori (edible seaweed) and shaped like a small burrito. The structure preserves the seaweed’s crispness, delivering a gentle crunch with every bite.
