Not long ago, Kansas City’s professional women’s soccer team, FC Kansas City, played matches at Swope Park. While the two-time NWSL champion team was disbanded in 2017, a new local women’s soccer team was formed under the temporary name, Kansas City NWSL, with a generic crest and team uniforms. Full brand development was underway, and now the KC Current soccer team has new jerseys to match their new name and crest. The team is unveiling their new Heartland kit today, their primary jersey for the 2022 NWSL season.
The new team jerseys are a mix of bold red, electric teal and white. Dark lines move across the jersey like water, an echo of the team’s name. The red is meant to symbolize passion, while the teal is meant to represent hope.
KC Current gets their name from the Missouri River, where the first stadium designed specifically for North American women’s professional soccer will be built. The multi-million dollar project is set to take place at Berkely River Front Park with a completion date of 2024. This season, KC Current plays at Children’s Mercy Park.
The new team kits and stadium in the works signal an unprecedented investment in women’s professional sports and a significant slice of Kansas City history. “We’re part of a growing league, women’s soccer is growing, and it’s proving to be a good investment,” says Sam Mewis, one of the team’s captains. “We’re lucky to have such a great example being set here in Kansas City, by our owners, our staff and all the fans here who believe in the team.”
