Summer’s Last Splash: Elevated Mermaidcore

Get in touch with your salty side and embrace the textures and feel of the ocean with mermaidcore—the latest trend in identity play that’s perfect for the waning days of summer.

Unlike its predecessor Barbicore’s bright and brash colors, mermaidcore is about romantic, subtle, ocean-like textures and textiles. The opal sheen found inside of seashells and natural adornments such as pearls are used to express this trend and remind us of the deep sea glamor of mermaids without being too costumey. The style can be done simply by pairing unexpected accessories with a shimmery shirt or skirt.

Although this trend is new, it’s bringing back some old-school classics, such as the pearl necklace. Seemingly more fitting for the likes of Barbara Bush than Bad Bunny, pearl necklaces have been embraced by both men and women donning the mermaidcore aesthetic. Whether worn as a classic single strand, layered with other necklaces or mixed with other forms of iridescent colored beads with interesting shapes, the pearl necklace adds a bit of drama to the mermaidcore aesthetic.

This trend celebrates summer’s last hoorah. Whether you’re headed out on vacation or just want to celebrate the end of summer, mermaidcore is a fun way to express individuality.
