What’s new in Kansas City food and drink: July 2026

Boozin’ and Bookin’ Is Back

After six months of what owners caused a “forced hibernation,”

The beloved bookstore-cocktail bar Afterword Tavern and Shelves, which had to move from their Crossroads location six months ago, has found a new space and reopened in the former Brewer’s Corner space in Midtown (3105 Gillham Road, KCMO). The grand reopening last month grew an enthusiastic crowd—so much so that the bar sold out of product on night one.

Top of the Town

Bar Phoebe, located atop the historic Holtman Building (708 E. 18th St., KCMO), is inspired by Phoebe Jane Ess, whom the bar describes as “Kansas City’s original firebrand: a suffragist, steadfast leader, and unapologetic force who believed the heartland deserved a seat at the table.” The indoor-outdoor space seats more than 200 guests and features live music Thursday through Sunday. The vibe and menu aims to be very Midwest, with comfort food with a slightly upscale twist like a chili hot dogs, walking tacos, pie and an array of cocktails on the menu (jello shots, anyone?).

End of an Era

After a decade in the West Bottoms’ Stockyards District, Lucky Boys has poured its last drink. The dive bar announced its permanent closure, ending its run as a favorite gathering spot for many, whether they’d drop in for a High Life and a round of pool or for the bar’s renowned Fillet-O-Fish sandwich. The closure marks the end of an era for one of the Stockyards District’s longest-running bars.

Metal and Matcha

Apparition Coffee (328 W. 85th St., KCMO) opened in mid-June in the former Second Best Coffee space, bringing a heavy metal-inspired style to the Waldo strip off 85th Street. Owner Brian Denman previously spent more than three years as one of the owners of Waterbird Coffee Company before launching this new venture. While the shop’s branding is new, some familiar odes will remain, like Second Best’s popular breakfast burritos.

Craft Putt Concludes

Craft Putt has officially closed both its Overland Park and Lee’s Summit locations. The mini-golf-and-craft-beer concept announced the news in a Facebook post last month, though the company’s Facebook page has since been deactivated. A message now posted on the business’s website reads, “Craft Putt is now permanently closed. Thank you Kansas City for all of the memories.” The venues combined indoor mini golf with a rotating selection of craft beer, along with regular events including trivia nights and bingo.
