With Fourth of July right around the corner, we asked our followers on Instagram for the best spots to buy homemade sausages in KC.
As it turns out, there are quite a few local gems specifically specializing in crafting sausage links and brats. The small German deli and grocer Werner’s Fine Sausages makes the linked protein the star of the show and the same goes for Wiener Kitchen and Strawberry Hill’s Krizman’s.
Our barbecue scene tends to focus on burnt ends and ribs but there’s plenty of pitmasters who stuff their own sausage like Fox and Pearl’s Nightgoat Barbecue and Harp Barbecue.
So, skip the grocery store and between stocking up on fireworks and strawberry shortcake, don’t forget about your local handcrafted meats for the grill.
Beginning with the most recommended, below are your submissions for KC’s best craft sausages.
Italian Sausage Company (7315 N. Oak Trafficway, Gladstone, MO)
This Gladstone deli and sandwich shop is one of my personal favorites and was the most endorsed from our followers. Owners Joe Jr. and Michelle Brancato’s Italian roots inspire their freshly made sausages with flavors like Tuscan Romano, peppers and onions, and chicken spiedini.
Weiner Kitchen (9645 W 87th St. Overland Park, KS)
The Overland Park hole-in-the-wall has deemed themselves a “sausage kingdom” and with their seemingly endless menu, we have to agree. Jalapeno cheddar kielbasas, andouille sausage, frankfurters, limitless beer brats and their most popular chorizo rojo sausage are just a handful of the options available to take home.
Krizman’s Sausage (424 N. 6th St. KCK)
With roots dating back to 1939, Strawberry Hill’s Krizman’s House of Sausage is a longstanding KC establishment. The family-owned sausage shop has been long inspired by their Croatian ancestry and now slings smoked and fresh sausages that are also served in restaurants around the city. Buy alongside a loaf of their walnut povotica bread.
Fox and Pearl’s Night Goat Barbecue (2143 Summit St. KCMO)
Chef Vaughn Good of Fox and Pearl explores outside of the fine dining bistro’s usual menu with his craft barbecue concept Night Goat Barbecue. On Sundays at Fox and Pearl, you can find jalapeno cheddar sausage and guajillo beef sausage available for ten dollars at a quarter pound. A catering menu allows customers to enjoy the sausages at home. Otherwise, guests can order the sausages for takeout.
Werner’s Fine Sausages (5736 Johnson Dr. Mission, KS)
A hidden gem located along Johnson Drive, Werner’s deli and grocer slings house made German-style bratwursts, English bangers, coils of Swedish potato sausages and so much more. A German-inspired lunch menu with sandwiches is available throughout the week and you can find the owner’s grilling outside on Saturdays. Don’t forget the German potato salad!
Affare (1911 Main St. KCMO)
On Affare’s menu, you’ll find a trio of brats created by German-born Master Chef Martin Heuser. They’re made fresh several times each week. But we will let you in on a little secret: you can place a preorder and pick them up to take home and cook yourself. Place your orders here.
