Plate’s pizza empire is expanding

Kansas City’s Plate Restaurant Group is expanding again. It plans Plate Pizzeria in the Northland’s Zona Rosa for spring 2025, along with locations slated to open later in Lee’s Summit and Olathe.

It will take 2,400-square-feet in the former Stone Canyon Pizza space at 8630 N.W. Prairie View Road. Stone Canyon Pizza closed in 2019.

“We are going to be as authentic as possible. We are purchasing our ovens from Italy, certified in Napoli,” says Christian Joseph, owner. “We will make the crust by hand and import as many ingredients as we can, following the standards set by the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana. Traditional flavors for the pizza and gelato, and we will make gelato in-house.”

It will not be full-service like the other two Plate restaurants, but more casual, with a walk-up window and outdoor seating.

“Geared toward families and priced as such,” Joseph says.

Plate Pizzeria also will offer dine-in, take-out, and delivery services within an 8-mile radius.

Joseph has a new Italian pizza oven ordered for his Plate Italiano Moderno at 701 E. 63rd St., Suite 100, in East Brookside. His Park Place restaurant, at 11655 Ash St. in Leawood, also has one of the ovens.

Once the Zona Rosa location opens, he will roll out the pizza menu to the two full-service restaurants.

He plans to expand the concept to Lee’s Summit and Olathe over the next three years.

Charlie Lowe of Crossroads Real Estate Group handled the negotiations for Zona Rosa.
