Ponak’s Enters a New Era

A Kansas City classic is under new ownership, but regulars shouldn’t expect much change.

After five decades on Southwest Boulevard, Ponak’s Mexican Restaurant & Bar (2856 Southwest Blvd., KCMO) has been sold to its longtime general manager Spencer Shaw, according to an announcement from Block & Company, Inc., Realtors. Shaw, who has helped lead day-to-day operations at the restaurant for years, is stepping into ownership with plans to preserve the institution’s identity while also expanding into catering.

The sale includes the 6,228-square-foot restaurant along with its outdoor patio space. It was brokered by Mitch DiCarlo and David M. Block of Block & Company, Inc., Realtors, who represented the property ownership in the transaction.

Over the years, Ponak’s has built a loyal following and has been a longtime gathering spot for margaritas and KC tacos. The restaurant celebrated its 50th anniversary in July of last year.

For now, the message is simple: the recipes, the atmosphere and the margaritas that made Ponak’s a Kansas City institution are here to stay — just under new stewardship.
